Cold Air Intakes - Benefits of Thermo Dynamics
14 09 2009Those who love speed are on a journey of increasing horsepower to new heights. Cold air intakes have become a part of the vocabulary of car aficionados due to the increase in popularity. Those that are experienced in cars with tuners and everyone else alike seem to know about intakes. Yet, does anyone really know how they work? Understanding them is a whole another world. It’s a dream to every car owner to have high engine performance. Since cold air intakes are quite easy to install, reasonably priced, and do not require you car to be changed which is great for every car owner.
The improvements that cold air intakes provide vary but the science that drives them are ultimately what’s important. Many people think that the temperature of the air is what makes the difference and this is partially true, but it’s the density of the air that is key. Lower temperature creates higher density. This results in greater performance within an engine since there is more oxygen to be used for combustion.
Perform an experiment to see what exactly we’re talking about. If you blow up a balloon and then place it in the freezer, it will get smaller. The balloon had greater density with a lower temperature than a warm balloon with less density. Now think about six balloons filled with warm air equaling the same density. If you put four of them in the freezer, they will shrink substantially. Think about an engine that uses two warm balloons for each intake stroke. The density and amount of cold air is reduced by half so the engine gets twice as much air to use to make more power.
However, it is difficult to find cool air under the engine of a car. The engine bay is a warm area so the air that surrounds the engine gets warm as well. Therefore, the cold air intakes must be put in to cool the air around it. The intakes not only make the air cooler improves the flow of air so that it doesn’t clog up within the stock system. The stock system has narrow pipes and can damage the flow of air throughout the car. Therefore the intakes reduce this damage dramatically.
Volumetric efficiency will also be increased with cold air intakes. This is what the car intakes compared to the maximum it could take in within an intake stroke. Therefore, extra horsepower will increase and give your car greater performance. Cold air intakes should be maintained properly with tuning and by doing so, your car should be running smoother in no time. For new intakes, check out your online auto parts dealer or ask your local mechanic for tips.
